Snow
Clearing snow in Mississauga is a major operation. The City works tirelessly to ensure safe and accessible streets, sidewalks, and transit stops during winter.

What gets cleared
5,700 lane Kilometres of roads
1,700 Kilometres of Sidewalks
3,300 MiWay Transit Stops
To manage this, the City deploys over 500 snow-clearing vehicles. While every snowfall is different, our teams are always ready to adapt and respond.
Snow Clearing Timelines
Priority Routes & Sidewalks: Cleared to bare pavement within 12-24 hours depending on snowfall.
-
Secondary Streets: Cleared to be safe and passable within 24-36 hours. Bare pavement may not be achievable.
Sidewalk Clearing
-
1,700 kilometers of priority sidewalks are cleared by the City, focusing on arterial and collector roads, transit routes, and areas near schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
-
The remaining 700 kilometers rely on residents’ goodwill to keep them clear. Mississauga doesn’t require sidewalk clearing bylaw but encourages everyone to help.
-
Council has approved new services for secondary sidewalks starting in the 2025-26 winter season.

How its done
-
Priority Roads: Cleared to bare pavement first, ensuring access for emergency services, public transit, and schools.
-
Secondary Roads: Addressed after priority routes and cleared to be safe and passable.
-
Cul-de-Sacs & Bends: Require special equipment and multiple passes for proper clearing.
-
Multiple Passes: Heavy snowfalls often mean plows will revisit streets to manage accumulations.
